Our customers also asked…

Can I make a Will online without a solicitor?

Yes. It is a popular, easy and perfectly legal way to write a Will, as long as your wishes are simple and you don’t have a complex estate. In fact, writing a Will online has many advantages over the traditional approach of engaging a solicitor, 1) It is quicker - your Will can be made in as little as 15 minutes, 2) It is cheaper and it is far more convenient, 3) You can do it from the privacy and comfort of your own living room.

Is it legal and safe to make an online will in the UK?

Absolutely. Our online Will making software allows you to create your own Will by answering simple to follow guided questions.

For your Will to be legally valid, you must:

  • Be 18 or over
  • Make it voluntarily. You are not being forced to make this Will by someone.
  • Be of sound mind. You need to be mentally capable of making decisions for yourself
  • Make it in writing, i.e you must print your Will
  • Sign it in the presence of 2 witnesses who are both over 18
  • Have it signed by your 2 witnesses, in your presence

What kind of Will does your online Will service make?

You can create a ‘basic’ Will online, which includes distributing your estate to beneficiaries including charities, choosing guardians for children and pets, leaving gifts and messages, plus setting out funeral plans.

You also can appoint attorneys by creating a Lasting Power of Attorneys (LPA’s) with just a few additional questions. We charge an additional fee for this service.

Finally, if you have a complex estate (such as multiple properties, businesses, investments, etc) we can still help you via our telephone service. Call us on 0330 043 0263 for a free quote.

What happens if I die without a Will?

You’ll be known as ‘Intestate’ and ‘intestacy’ are the legal terms used to describe when a person dies without a legally valid Will.

The ‘rules of intestacy’ are a set of laws in England and Wales that guide what happens to a person’s estate when they die without a valid Will. Under these rules, only certain close family members can inherit from the deceased and in a very strict, inflexible way.

Who inherits is determined by a fixed set of criteria depending on your marital status and whether you have children.

Another consideration is the fact you’ll leave loved ones guessing about your wishes, for example your funeral preferences and any gifts or messages you’d have liked to leave.

What can I leave to others in my online Will?

Valulife’s online Will writing service allows you to leave:

  • Money, stocks and shares
  • Jewellery and heirlooms
  • Vehicles and electronic items (such as phones, laptops)
  • Property, stocks and shares

Remember that debts, fees and taxes will need to be paid by your Estate before any remaining money (known as your residual estate) is paid out to those your select as beneficiaries.

What can I do to protect my children if I die?

We recommend appointing guardians for your children, who’ll be able to look after them if the worst happens. This gives you complete control over who you feel would be best suited to bring them up. You can select up to four guardians. They must be over the age of 18 at the time of writing your Will.

You can also make provisions for your children in your Will, such as leaving gifts such as money, vehicles and jewellery as well as making them a beneficiary of your residual estate (everything that's left after debts, taxes, funeral costs and gifts).

Finally, you might like to leave messages in your Will, such a special memory you shared together which your children can remember you by.

What happens to my pets if I die?

By making a Will, you can decide who should care for your pet in the event of your death. In the same way you can appoint a legal guardian to take care of your children after your death, so it is possible to name a legal guardian for your pets in your Will.

When naming a guardian for your pets, you should also consider the costs associated with passing on a pet. Some clients therefore choose to leave a cash gift to the guardian to help the new owner cover the costs of feeding and caring for your animal.

If you do not make a Will, or you make no formal arrangements in your Will for your pet, it is down to your family or friends to try and make provision for your pet after your death. This can put them in a very difficult position and lead to a potentially undesirable, difficult outcome for both your pet and their new owner.

Where will Valulife keep my Will if I subscribe to storage?

Once you’ve completed your Will, printed, signed and witnessed it, we recommend that you securely store it for when the time comes - along with telling your Executors where it is!

We’ll store your Will 150m underground in our secure storage facility with a full audit trail of who, what and when handles your documents. Only yourself or your executors (only after your death) will be able to request its retrieval.

We charge £20/year for storage of all your documents produced using Valulife and £30 each time you want to retrieve a document, for example when you want to update your Will and destroy the previous one. We will not charge your Executors to retrieve documents after your death.

How often do I need to update my online Will?

The Government recommends that you update your Will every 5 years, but it's also important to update your Will whenever a major life event happens such as:

  • You have a new child, or grandchild
  • You get engaged, married or divorced
  • You buy or inherit a new home
  • If someone your mention in your Will dies
  • If Guardians become unsuitable, for example move away or split up
  • You have a windfall or new item that should be considered in your Will
  • You change your mind about who should inherit

The fantastic news is that you get unlimited updates in your first year, then it's just £12/year to continue with unlimited updates and checks by our Will specialists.

Can you see what I’ve written in my will?

Only when you’ve submitted your Will for checking. This gives our Will Specialist a one time access token to view your Will and ensure everything is ok. Once we approve it, our access is removed and we can no longer see any part of your Will. Your Will is fully encrypted, so even in the unlikely event of a data breach, your data is unreadable to anyone but you.

What’s included in my online Will purchase?

You get a legally binding Will that you can print and sign at home. The service also includes unlimited amends, checks and support from our Will specialists in the first year, after which its just £12.
